McDaniel Explains the Need for Further Information on WAAS Capabilities Given its increased accuracy, pilots who fly with WAAS avionics systems are authorized to fly throughout the US without the reliance on ground-based navigation aids; this precision approach capability has led to unprecedented access to general aviation airports, with over 5000 ins currently qualified for a WAAS approach. McDaniel believes, however, that there is still an informational gap between the knowledge currently available for pilots and the knowledge necessary for pilots to truly understand WAAS capabilities for such things as RNP and the future implementation of GLS minimums. Collaboratively developed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT), WAAS is used to combat the ionosphere disturbances, clock drift, and satellite orbit errors that prevent basic GPS signals from meeting the FAA requirements necessary for precision flight approach. Through its system of approximately 25 ground reference stations positioned across the continental United States and Hawaii, WAAS utilizes collected data to create a GPS signal correction that is then broadcast to WAAS-enabled receivers. The result is a GPS accuracy improvement of approximately three meters 95% of the time. Matthew McDaniel, owner of Progressive Aviation Services, has developed a one-day seminar for current WAAS-pilots and pilots considering a WAAS upgrade to help build an informational foundation …

Many aircraft owners and pilots have heard of the Wide Area Augmentation System; yet, for most aviators, WAAS remains a complicated operational maze. Matthew McDaniel, owner of Progressive Aviation Services, has developed a one-day seminar for current WAAS-pilots and pilots considering a WAAS upgrade to help build an informational foundation of both the benefit and usage of WAAS technology. Covering all aspects of WAAS rules, regulations, and operations, the seminar addresses WAAS-enabled avionic systems and autopilots, as well as many IFR procedural items for pilots. Aero-TV attended one of Progressive Aviation Services WAAS seminars, and took the opportunity to speak with McDaniel about his most suggested WAAS tips. In the first part of his series, McDaniel explains how to …
Garmin’s G600 Receives Certification, Deliveries Begin During the heady days of Oshkosh 2008, Garmin confirmed to ANN that it had received FAA Approved Model List Supplemental Type Certification with an Approved Model List (AML STC) for the G600. The FAA’s approval allows the G600 to be installed in 785 different makes and models of normal and utility category aircraft, including twin combustion engine and turbo-prop engine aircraft with a certification weight up to 12500 lbs. This is good news for those of us with airplanes that we’d kinda like to keep… but still want to take advantage of the glass panel revolution — and without mortgaging our houses to do so. Garmin’s G600 incorporates two individual displays – a PFD and MFD – in a customized package designed for an easy retrofit installation. The G600 combines primary flight data including attitude and air data with navigation, weather, terrain and traffic data displayed in an intuitive pictorial format on dual LCD displays. This large, user-friendly presentation allows pilots to quickly and efficiently scan the data so that they can stay ahead of the aircraft during all phases of flight. The G600 is designed to integrate with Garmin’s panel mount WAAS GPS products. It replaces traditional mechanical gyroscopic flight instruments with Garmin’s solid state Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) that has superior reliability and accuracy, and features rapid alignment while moving, including in-flight dynamic …

At EAA AirVenture 2009, Honeywell introduced their next evolution in avionics products, the Bendix/King AV8OR ACE, at an introductory price of only 99. Offering a seven-inch display, the AV8OR ACE includes a sunlight-readable touchscreen interface for easy viewing and usage; the Touch and See capability allows users to simply tap on screen objects, such as airports, VORs, and airspace boundaries, to quickly access further information. Customers can use aviation navigation in either portrait or landscape modes. The lightweight design also features FAA IFR geo-referenced charts, eliminating the need to carry paper charts in travel. The AV8OR ACE dramatically increases situational awareness by providing aircraft location display directly on High and Low en route charts, approach plates, and airport taxiway diagrams. Customers can obtain digital charts and approach charts from Bendix-King’s vendor. The AV8OR ACE includes a WAAS GPS system, automotive navigation, regional databases, and flight guide airport services data including fuel pricing, FBO information, and local facilities guidance. The units multimedia functionality and Bluetooth capability allows for data linkage with Bluetooth-enabled phones, alternative GPS receiver, and XM weather receiver. The weather interface supports WxWorx, allowing the AV8OR ACE to display real-time weather information overlaid in detail on a moving map, including graphical METARs, AIRMETs, SIGMETS, and PIREPs.
