McDaniel Explains the Need for Further Information on WAAS Capabilities Given its increased accuracy, pilots who fly with WAAS avionics systems are authorized to fly throughout the US without the reliance on ground-based navigation aids; this precision approach capability has led to unprecedented access to general aviation airports, with over 5000 ins currently qualified for a WAAS approach. McDaniel believes, however, that there is still an informational gap between the knowledge currently available for pilots and the knowledge necessary for pilots to truly understand WAAS capabilities for such things as RNP and the future implementation of GLS minimums. Collaboratively developed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT), WAAS is used to combat the ionosphere disturbances, clock drift, and satellite orbit errors that prevent basic GPS signals from meeting the FAA requirements necessary for precision flight approach. Through its system of approximately 25 ground reference stations positioned across the continental United States and Hawaii, WAAS utilizes collected data to create a GPS signal correction that is then broadcast to WAAS-enabled receivers. The result is a GPS accuracy improvement of approximately three meters 95% of the time. Garmin’s G600 Receives Certification, Deliveries Begin During the heady days of Oshkosh 2008, Garmin confirmed to ANN that it had received FAA Approved Model List Supplemental Type Certification with an Approved Model List (AML STC) for the G600. The FAA’s approval allows the G600 to be installed in 785 different makes and models of normal and utility category aircraft, including twin combustion engine and turbo-prop engine aircraft with a certification weight up to 12500 lbs. This is good news for those of us with airplanes that we’d kinda like to keep… but still want to take advantage of the glass panel revolution — and without mortgaging our houses to do so. Garmin’s G600 incorporates two individual displays – a PFD and MFD – in a customized package designed for an easy retrofit installation. The G600 combines primary flight data including attitude and air data with navigation, weather, terrain and traffic data displayed in an intuitive pictorial format on dual LCD displays. This large, user-friendly presentation allows pilots to quickly and efficiently scan the data so that they can stay ahead of the aircraft during all phases of flight. The G600 is designed to integrate with Garmin’s panel mount WAAS GPS products.
